Aussies lead the way in the knitting cafe trend

It’s not hard to tell that knitting, crocheting and other crafty hobbies are fasionable atm – all you have to do is check out all the Aussie bloggers, authors and now… knitting cafes!!

This is a relatively new avenue – turns out that there’s only a handful of cafes across the world dedicated to the knitting and crocheting niche – but there are TWO in Australia!

There’s Woolly Latte’s in Perth, WA (what a fab name) and A Coffee and A Yarn in Newtown, NSW.

Unfortunately, the Woolly Latte’s web site is pretty bare, but A Coffee and A Yarn has at least some information about the classes they offer (I’m eyeing off the beginner’s knitting and beginner’s crocheting course, closely followed by the Amigurumi course).

I’m still lamenting the end of Notebook: magazine and their craft classes, but I reckon these types of venues will hold their own and keep the craft trend alive.

While I was getting the goss on the state of knitting cafes, I came across this pick of a (name unknown) knitting cafe in LA… isn’t it stunning? Makes me want to give up housework and craft instead!

Homemade Portal Weighted Companion Cube Tissue Cozy

I missed the boat when it was first released, so a week or so back when I noticed Portal on special I splurged the two American dollars and made it mine.  Til playing it, I never realised why it had cult status.  Now however, I understand that the cake is a lie.

These instructions are a step by step guide to making your own Weighted Companion Cube Tissue Cozy.  Once you’ve made it, you can relive the happy times which were abundant before you were forced to euthanise it in the Emergency Intelligence Incinerator.  Of course if you’re feeling extra lazy, you can always buy the premade plush version from ThinkGeek.

If none of this post makes sense, have a read of the Portal wiki page.  If it still doesn’t make sense, well, it’s a gaming thing.

Notebook: Magazine’s classes in The Craft Room

Sydney-sider crafty-wannabes (oh, hai!), have you heard the awesome news?

Notebook: Magazine is offering craft classes!

They’re calling it The Craft Room and will be starting with Sydney classes in May and June, but have promised to expand to Melbourne and other capitals in the near future.

They’re offering sewing, embroidery, crocheting, knitting, quilting, scrapbooking AND CUPCAKE DECORATING!

Guess which one Leigh and I have registered for already? (Yay cupcakes!). We’re sofa king excited to be going – and Liz is coming with us, too! Yogi from Sweet Dreams Cakes will be our teacher and it looks like she makes spectacular cupcakes – nom!

(Shh, don’t tell Leigh or Liz, but I want to peer-pressure them to come to the beginner’s sewing class. It’s taught by Corrie, and if you take a look at what she makes, you’ll see why I’m so keen to go for a lesson!).

The classes are reasonably priced (we seem to think so, unless anyone has any knowledge/experience to share?) with the cupcake decorating class costing us $75 for a three-hour class (though it’s going up to $95 for the June timetable). The bigger, all-day classes are $200+. The sewing classes are sponsored by Brother, featuring brand-new sewing machines to play on!

Crafty eggs

I wish I had a hand steady enough to make cute things like this out of eggshells:

The little shower cap is just too adorable! Check out Chez Larsson for a heap of other scenes created with eggshells. Amazing stuff.
