Bargain shopping tips

Who doesn’t love a bargain? I’m not a good shopper all the time; sometimes I end up paying way too much for something because I’m too lazy (or impatient) to make an effort to save some pennies. But I wanted to share some of my fave bargain shopping tips, because what’s the point of keeping bargains a secret?

shopping-lasooLasoo.com.au: This is a relatively new web site (it won Best New Site in NetGuide Magazine’s 2008 Web Awards) that displays specials from current catalogues around Australia. The search interface is really easy to use and content can be localised to make search results relevant. You can also subscribe to their newsletter for the latest catalogues, bargains and competitions. Caroline’s shopping blog is also worth checking out, she covers all things pretty and ugly and everything else in between.

shopping-appliancesAppliances Online: I discovered this site a couple of years ago literally by googling the model number of the washing machine I wanted. The fridge and front-loader washing machine we bought through Appliances Online ended up saving us over $450 on our total purchase based on RRP. From what I’ve discovered, Appliances Online is the web-front for Winnings Appliances in Alexandria (it was a Winnings truck that delivered my wonderful whitegoods). Delivery is free in the Sydney metro area and I just got a quote for Melbourne delivery of $20 per order. Next-day delivery is offered if they have stock ready to roll out their door to yours.

shopping-amazoncaAmazon.ca: Because of the exchange rate, it can be cheaper for Aussies to buy from Amazon Canada compared to Amazon.com. At the moment the saving isn’t huge because of “current economic climate”, rest assured that when the Aussie dollar is better against the greenback Amazon Canada is the place to shop! I’m hoping our dollar improves soon so I can buy the Season 8 Will and Grace boxset.

shopping-ozbargainOzBargain: This site has gone gangbusters in recent months with lots and lots of new bargains posted every day. Personally I find it hard to not feel swamped by all the listings, but I have it on good authority that subscribing to OzBargain’s RSS feed is an easy way to keep up with the bargain goss. Our coffee machine only exists in our kitchen because it was listed on OzBargain one Saturday morning!
